When we arrived at my in-laws there was a tower of boxes awaiting for me. What was inside? Christmas in ~~July~~ March people, Christmas in March, and it was a good one! My husband calls them the "pre-purchases" ;)

This week's turn to share some makeup goodies and tips is Sam's from The Peak of Tres Chic. Sam's blog is one of my favorites and you should definitely check it out for an extraordinary daily dose of inspiration!

What's your current makeup bag?
It seems I am always changing makeup bags and none of mine are very cute. But here is one I would really love to have, this makeup bag from Anthropologie! I'm a sucker for Chevron print.

Do you have a makeup tip or secret you would like to share?
-The most important part of a good beauty routine is having the right application brushes. It may seem unnecessary, but brushes really are worth investing in. I suggest Origins or Chanel- they both have great brushes.

-Get regular facials. It may seem indulgent- but there is no better money spent than protecting and caring for your skin. I try to go every 6 weeks and get extractions to clear out my pores.

-Do your makeup in a place with at least a bit of natural light. This way, you will be able to blend your makeup well and make sure you don't walk out the front door looking orange!

Any particular makeup trend that you're looking forward for spring?
The trend I have been wanting to try is electric lips. I typically don't follow makeup trends regularly, but this one has intrigued me and I am waiting for the perfect time to sport some bright pink lips!

How does your day makeup routine differs from your night time one?
My day routine for work or errands on the weekends is much more natural. I wear concealer, a small amount of blush, mascara, and lip gloss. I don't usually wear eyeshadow or line my eyes too prominently.

For date nights with my boyfriend or nights out with the girls, I will typically apply a bit more makeup. I'll apply a smoky eye, line my lids with that Artliner I already raved about, and might even slide on some lipstick! :) If I do wear lipstick, it's always Benefit. My go-to shade is called Wild Card!

How was your weekend? We had a lovely one, on Saturday we took Matthew to a Carnival near by and on Sunday we went to Toys R Us, it was Matthew's first time, so you can only imagine! We spent hours in there!

Remember last week when I said I got a couple of things from Aritzia? Even though I wanted to buy the whole store (not kidding) I managed to control myself (very proud!) and got these pieces. I know I'll use those tanks above a lot in the Island and I love that one is very bright and the other one is pastel (see how good I am at controlling myself?). The rest of the pieces speak for themselves!
PS: I'm pretty sure my behavior in the store was just as Matthew's in Toys R Us ;)

I know these two don't look identical but I think they are pretty much alike. Even though the D&G has a more refined look, the River Island pair is quite a great option for a fraction of the price, don't you think?

Do you have a makeup tip or secret you would like to share?
I don't believe in spending lots of money for color products, I think the investment absolutely should be in skincare products. Everything else is just fun. Also, a lot of products do double duty. A white/pearly eye shadow can be used as a highlighter for cheekbones or under the arch of your brow. If you don't have blush, use your pink lipgloss and blend into the apples of your cheeks. Draw black kohl liner onto your eyelids and blend, blend, blend. It's perfect for a smoky eye, you don't need black shadow. Experiment with different products...it's a lot of fun!

Any particular makeup trend that you're looking forward for spring?
I don't really follow makeup trends. But I'm trying to learn to love lipstick! I'm such a lipgloss girl so I'm working on appreciating lipstick more! It's so hard to find the right color for everyday that doesn't make me feel way overdone.

How does your day makeup routine differs from your night time one?
It's all the same, I don't do much differently. I have an unhealthy obsession with mascara. So I always have a few/too many coats on even during the day. I usually just touch up my blush and I'm ready to go. If it's a major event, then my go-to is a smoky eye. I've worn red lipstick once in my life, for my cousin's rehearsal dinner in Italy this past summer. I really liked it so hopefully I can incorporate more bright lips into my nighttime routine.

Well hello hello! This lady is blogging from Toronto! After a LONG and excruciating adventure we made it sound and safe (and somewhat mentally sane) to Canada. Thank goodness I was somehow mentally prepared for this trip because, let me tell you, traveling with a toddler boy is not easy at all, but more on my trip later on this week ok?

Let's begin the week with some fashion, and today you get a double dose of fashion, one, my favorite looks from the Red Carpet, and second, the last installment of my Spring Essentials (coming soon).

To me these 3 ladies looked absolutely gorgeous, how stunning was Giuliana Rancic in that sparkly number? And what about Michelle Williams' look? In my opinion, absolute perfection in every single detail. And lastly, Kristen Wiig looked so natural, loved her dress and hair, only wished she had added a sparkly belt or something, but other than that I thought she looked beautiful. What about you? Which were your favorites? Did you watch the show?

As our travel day gets closer (3 days and we're off!) my mind is already thinking about all the wonderful things we'll be able to do while off The Island. And by wonderful things I just mean those small, common things that you probably do everyday but that we don't get a chance to enjoy here.

You really have to picture my life as if I live in Dharma (LOST), with the exception that there is a somehow decent grocery shop, a bank, gas station, pharmacy, and mail store. There's not even a playground for the kiddos, is just us and our houses. So, I'm really looking forward to be in civilization, even if it's just for 3 weeks, I'm just going to enjoy it to the very max. So I hope you understand my excitement if I tweet something stupid like: "Eating strawberries" or "At Starbucks" ;)

What's your current makeup bag?
I recently bought a no-name (shock-horror) makeup bag in a homewares store. I can't really say much about it except for I found it incredibly cute! Country Road in Australia sell similar-looking ones and they update their patterns every season!

Is there anything you're coveting right now?
MAC mascara. I've been told on multiple occasions they are the best, but have yet to try one.

Do you have a makeup tip or secret you would like to share?
This may be on the obvious side, but drink lots of water! It will give you a beautiful glow like no moisturizer will!

Any particular makeup trend that you're looking forward for spring?
I'm digging the red lips trend these days. And since I still haven't found my perfect shade, I just might give that bold red lip a try!

How does your day makeup routine differs from your night time one?
From day to night, it's pretty simple, I add eye shadow! I don't tend to wear it in daytime because I like to keep my makeup looking natural. I usually go for a shimmery smoky eye at night. A no brainer classic that makes any outfit shine.

My Life file: Uniform

How was your weekend? Or should I say long weekend for most of you, right? Mine was quite productive, I've been so so busy that the only way not to feel overwhelmed is to get organized and tackle everything I have to do right away. Would you believe me if I say that I have almost 2 weeks worth of posts ready? Yeap, and I'm having a hard time saving the ones for next week, I just want to share it all!! But since we're flying on Saturday (!!!!!) I suspect that Mr. Matthew won't be too easy on us with the jet lag (15 hour difference, ouch!), so I want to make sure I'm covered ;)

So, on this sharing note I want to show you my uniform here in The Island. Denim shorts are just the easiest to dress (plus there's no where to dress up to) so I wear them almost every single day. I've been thinking that maybe I should get a couple of colored and printed ones to mix it up, like the leopard ones I talked about it here, yeap I think that's the plan ;)

We usually celebrate Valentine's by going out for dinner (and the hubs gets me a little something), but not having that possibility here I decided to bake some cupcakes for us and my friends. I used this recipe for the cupcakes (swapped the buttermilk for skim milk) and this recipe for the frosting (my favorite recipe for frosting now) and I really like how they turned out, they were delicious!

Is there anything you're coveting right now?
One item I am really lusting after is the Chanel Sublimage Eye Cream. I picked up a sample and I am hooked. Best eye cream ever, but I am having a hard time justifying the price to the hubby!

Do you have a makeup tip or secret you would like to share?
Make-up tip I swear by is moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Nobody looks good with dry skin. I swear by Cetaphil moisturizing cream (the thick kind in the jar). I lather it on morning and night. Then I apply Bobbi Brown's hydrating eye cream. I really think this keeps my skin looking smooth and refreshed. If your skin doesn't look good to start off with, no make-up can hide that!

Any particular makeup trend that you're looking forward for spring?
Make-up trend for Spring I am most looking forward to is the natural/nude look. I adore a fresh face with not too much make-up. I am not one to follow to many crazy make-up trends. I believe less is more-unless its a big night out! I love all the peach and coral lip and cheek colors for Spring as well.

How does your day makeup routine differs from your night time one?
The main difference from my day look to night look is I wear much more eyeliner, a darker eyeshadow and a hint of lip color. During the day I keep it simple with bronzer+mascara+ and lipgloss being my essentials and of course a kick ass concealor- I think all us moms need that!

Our beach bungalow at Poindimie - West Coast - New Caledonia - 3 weeks ago

I'm so excited that the weekend is finally here, besides the obvious, we are getting closer and closer to getting off The Island (just for 3 weeks though). 2 weeks people, 2 WEEKS and we're off to civilization woo hoo!!!! We'll be stopping for a day in Vancouver, a couple of days in my beloved Toronto and then 2 weeks in Miami, I.CAN'T.WAIT!

Sometimes, I like to group my obsessions by color, a little bit crazy, I know, but to me it just looks more organized, makes more visual sense to me I guess? If you want to know, I once color coordinated the contents of 2 suitcases without even noticing! So you'll notice that the majority of my obsessions posts are somehow color coordinated, though I guess that the particular color palette is in my mind too, makes any sense? I'm now confused...

Anthropologie gold flecks tank: I'm so in love with this tank (I think I'm just going to get right now), even though is actually navy (I know, looks black right?).

I'm so thrilled to share with all of you the new look for the blog! Amanda from Lust Luxe Love is the master behind it, and let me tell you, she is one talented girl, she just translated my thoughts into a tangible reality, and even gave me more than what I asked for. What a pleasure it has been to work with her! I'm so so HAPPY with the result! If you are looking for a blog makeover, to be done fast, smoothly and at an affordable rate, Amanda is your girl ;)

I really want to start this new look with something I consider very important: celebrating the good things and giving thanks.
I have two words for two milestones: one year.
Yes, The Vault Files turned 1 year at the end of 2011 and I officially survived 1 year in Kone, New Caledonia (!!!!). I think these 2 deserve to be acknowledged and celebrated.

These 2 events are immensely related to each other. Let me explain (and it is ok if you leave this to read later, for whenever you have the time to, but may I ask that you do it? The following is for you):

When I started blogging I had no idea what I was getting into. I mean, you think you know, but you really don't have a clue. To me, the greatest discovery about blogging has been the relationships and connections I have made along the way. I had no idea that I would "meet" so many talented, sweet, nice people over this past year. In my opinion, these connections are the very best thing about blogging. And you want to know something? You already have made a great impact on someone, yes, you all have had such a positive impact in my life, I cannot thank you enough for it. I don't think I would have survived The Island without you, seriously. All those small chats, comments, 2 sentences e-mails we have everyday or so, make me feel like I have tons of friends around me (yes even though I've never seen you in person I consider you my friends). You have really made a difference on someone else's life, so THANK YOU from the very bottom of my heart!

I hope I can continue to make more and more lovely connections and for all of you who blog I thank you for the daily inspiration!

This one is my current favorite. I have a monogrammed one, but with my wedding in the near future and my initials about to change, I think I should be looking for a replacement. This one is #1. The pink trim and black and white polka dots are a perfect combo.

Do you have a makeup tip or secret you would like to share?
I wish I did, but for me, its to keep it simple. When I put on too much make-up I start looking like a cartoon.

Any particular makeup trend that you're looking forward for spring?
I absolutely love bright colored lips! But I don't think that's necessarily spring specific! Looks great all year round.

How does your day makeup routine differs from your night time one?
During the day, I apply the products above. At night I use Neutrogena make-up removers wipes and Cetaphil facewash and moisturizer.

How was your weekend? I guess you all watched the Super Bowl? Hope you had a good time! Our Saturday was fun, we invited over a couple of friends for a barbecue dinner and went to bed quite late (Matthew included).

For the past 2 weeks I've been working on a makeover, yes, everything is getting a makeover: the blog, the shop, business cards, even me (got an appointment for a haircut, including some color!). I'd really love to find the perfect red lipstick. I'm half-Japanese so reds often turn bright pink or orange on my lips. Any suggestions out there?

How does your day makeup routine differs from your night time one?
I believe in the smokey eye for nighttime! For day, I keep it simple with brows, mascara, blush and definitely lip moisturizer and sheer gloss.

My life File: From my closet

How was your weekend? Hope you had a good one!
On Sunday, as I was going through my closet I realized that I have a handful of pastel pieces and some (ok, only 2) bright ones (I've never been a "bright" kind of girl).

I got the striped tee last September while in Florida and I love it. The eyelet one is an old top that I was considering to give away, but maybe I'm having second thoughts about it ;)
And the bottom right one is actually a dress (also on the giving away pile), is kind of big on me (bought it while pregnant) so, if I decide to keep it I'll have to do some alterations.

This week is Emily's turn to share her favorite makeup products with us. She's the girl behind Recently, and even though it hasn't been that long since I started following her, I like to believe we have become "bloggie friends". Make sure to check out her blog, she has great style and she sure knows how to tackle DIY projects.

What's your current makeup bag?
I'm contemplating buying the monogrammed version of this hand-blocked West Elm bag. Its color, texture and pattern are seriously out of this world!

Do you have a makeup tip or secret you would like to share?
Highlighter! I don't use it on a daily basis, but when I want to emphasize certain areas, I always reach for a liquid highlighter. Benefit and Josie Maran both have wonderful choices. I'll use it on my cheekbones (light application is key!) or dab it lightly in the middle and inside corners of my eyelids to open them up and create depth. Less is definitely more when using a highlighter, and when applied correctly it can give you a beautiful, natural glow.

Any particular makeup trend that you're looking forward for spring?
I'm always a sucker for the latest trendy nail colors and of course this spring will be no different. It looks like pale hues will be on my list of faves, as well as more of the nail art trend we've been seeing lately. Instead of glitter, think more along the lines of ombre and tribal nails. I can't say I'll try every trend, but I'll love the chance to experiment!

How does your day makeup routine differs from your night time one?
My daytime makeup routine is tragically absent lately. Usually, I only have time to apply some tinted moisturizer, a dab of the amazing Argan color stick, a swipe of eyeshadow, mascara and I'm done. For evening, I always add eyeliner, using a dark black, brown or navy just along my upper lashes. I tend to stay away from the smoky eye look because I think it just makes me look older! I do, however, love to wear red or berry lips at night to amp up the smolder factor!

The Great Wall - Beijing - China - 2008

Any special plans for the weekend? I'm very excited for this weekend because the husband has been given Monday & Tuesday off, so that means we have a 3-day long weekend! (husband works on Saturdays). So, on Sunday morning we are crossing over to the east side of the Island to a beach "hotel" and spending a night there, apparently is nice (to the island standards), so I'll make sure to take some pics to share.

Running File: The Shoes

Since running is another passion of mine I thought of starting a whole new file: The running file. Here I will be writing about anything and everything that has to do with running. Hopefully I'll motivate you to start (or continue!) running ;)

So this is what I have learned about running shoes:

- First and foremost you got to find out about your gait. If you want to avoid injuries you really need to get the perfect pair of shoes according to your foot type. Don't know anything about it? Plenty explanation (and the test) here.
- Size up. I'm usually an 8 - 8.5 in regular shoes, but when it comes to my running shoes I'm a 9.5. Why is that? Well, with your stride, your feet slides in your shoe so you really need to make sure there is enough room for them to do so.
- Get two pairs of shoes. They say (you know, the masters) that the midsoles of your shoes take up to 24 hours to reshape so it's wise to have 2 pairs. You really want the sole to be in it's best condition.
- Make sure you double lace, you don't want to trip over right?
- If you're going trail running get a pair of trail running shoes, as you will need a good grip. I got these Nike Alvord (see below) last year and I really like them, they have great cushioning. My street running shoes are the Asics GT 2160

I got this for Christmas from my mom and I looooove it. It carries all my essentials.

Do you have a makeup tip or secret you would like to share?
Two words - Lip liner. Lip liner adds a little color without making you look like you're wearing much.

Any particular makeup trend that you're looking forward for spring?
I've seen a lot of pastels in the Spring makeup collections. I'm a little nervous about it bc pastels are not the best colors for my olive-y complexion, but I will definitely be brave and try it out!

How does your day makeup routine differs from your night time one?
I try to keep my day makeup simple. A little concealer, mascara, and some lip liner and I'm good to do. At night I like to do it up more. I like smokey eyes with a dramatic eye liner if going out for a night in the town.

How did you spend the weekend? I spent a BUNCH of time on Etsy looking up for some vintage jewels at reasonable prices and after a long debate I made up my mind and got what you see above, all for $66, not bad right?

I'm really enjoying the two opposite color trends for Spring: Neons and Pastels. I think Spring's fashion has something for everyone, if you want to be bold and standout you can go with bold neon pieces, while if you want to embrace a softer palette there are plenty of great choices in muted colors.
In my case, I look forward to embrace both trends. I'm loving everything neon and I can't wait to welcome some pastels into my wardrobe, what about you? any preference?

I have a seemingly strange tip that I've done for as long as I can remember... After applying my mascara, I use a blowdryer (on a cool setting) to curl and dry my eyelashes. Works like a dream everytime!

Any particular makeup trend that you're looking forward for spring?
I'm anticipating spring this year mostly because I love a fresh look with extra pops of light pink. I look for reasons to add more blush and pretty pink lips!

How does your day makeup routine differs from your night time one?
For daytime, I typically apply mascara only to my upper lashes and kick it up a notch in the evening by coating both upper and lower lashes.

Well, it needs to be structured and it needs to have a shoulder strap (for more versatility, remember I have a toddler?). Can you spot all the distractions on the table?

For NYE we went for dinner to a Thai Restaurant down in Noumea. There was 13 of us plus 5 kiddos, so half of the table had a relaxed dinner while the other one (mine of course) had a hectic one! All things considered we had a great time and the kids had fun playing together.

My favorite running bra at the moment

Since I have a couple of running readers (YAY!) I thought why not share my running essentials? I mean, even if you are not a runner, it may bring you some inspiration, or if one of your resolutions for this year is to stay fit or start exercising maybe it will bring you some motivation, yes? no?

1. Lululemon headbands: My absolute favorite headbands. Love them so much! Not only they are reversible but the ruching at the front is very flattering.
2. Music: Listening to my favorite songs makes me so happy while I run! If I'm running with the stroller (which is 90% of the times) I use my Nano because I can easily strap it around the handle, but for most solo runs and races I take my shuffle. And as for earphones I like them waterproof and the kind that straps around your ear, otherwise they just fall out of my ear and I find that annoying!
3. Sunglasses: Oakley really makes the best sunnies, mine are so lightweight that you literally forget you're wearing them.
4. GPS watch: My husband got me a Garmin watch (the Forerunner 210) for my birthday and I LOVE it. Knowing my pace and distance is very important to me.
5. Running caps: In breathable fabrics for sunny runs.

My life File: 2012 Resolutions

Even though I love to make lists, this is just one thing I never do, and to be honest I don't even remember the last time I did a new year's resolution list. My life File: A Christmas gift that made it to The Island

And this is the Christmas gift that made it to The Island. Yeap, I know, most of you are freezing, but is summer on this side of the world, so I'm pretty close to melting, evaporating, and disintegrating, hence all I can think of is cooling off at the beach.

I'm a huge fan of Vix, and if there is something I could blindly recommend it would be their swimwear, not only their fabrics are stunning but the quality is superb. Plus, their attention to detail is incredible. Hands down my favorite brand of swimwear, so I got these two with extra 30% off (Cyber Monday deal!) and my lovely mother-in-law sent them my way!

My life File: Christmas gifts awaiting for me in Civilization

Spending Christmas in The Island meant two things: no family and no gifts. While I can't do anything about getting the family here or traveling there to see them, I can certainly do one thing: Online shopping. And so I did. These are a couple of things I got in the last couple of weeks and that I'm going to consider as my Chrsitmas gifts. They are waiting for me in Florida, at my in-laws, and hopefully I'll be able to claim them soon ;)

1. Kate Long Stevenson painting: I got it from her first blog sale over at Look Linger Love recently. Love how calm it is, I'm thinking on placing it over my bedside table.

Merry Christmas!! How was your Holiday weekend? Hope you had a fantastic weekend filled with lots of love!

On the 24th we had a quiet Christmas dinner at our place and on the 25th we just relaxed all day long, ate leftovers and watched movies (Monsters Vs. Aliens, The Hangover 2 and Love Actually) Can you guess my favorite one? ;)

As I was going through some pictures I came across these ones so I thought I would share them. I got this "Charlie Brown-esque" tree and another plastic pot (one of those ugly orange ones) to place the tree. I couldn't resist the idea of looking at these ugly pots so I bought some gold spray paint (yes I was really impressed I could find it here) and sprayed them both. It took me less than 5 min, (plus 24 hours of drying of course!)

Snow covered trees on a Skiing trip circa 2008 - Northern Ontario

Wow, tomorrow is December 24th! How the hell did that happen? I can't believe is Christmas already, do you? Kind of bizarre (not to say depressing) spending Christmas here in The Island, I have to be honest, it doesn't feel like Christmas at all, I guess that's why I'm surprised that tomorrow is already the 24th!

Our tradition is to celebrate on the 24th with a Christmas dinner, and then on the 25th we open the gifts that "Santa" or Baby Jesus brought to us. This year we told Santa not to bring gifts for us (we anticipated that it was going to be complicated, also known as lack of options!), but Matthew is getting a gift or two to open on Sunday and I'm looking forward to watch him unwrap his gifts ;) What about you, what are your plans?

I make sure my eybrows are a nice shape with an unused mascara wand. You know how they leave them out at Sephora to test mascaras with? Well it’s the perfect tool to brush the brows into place perfectly!

Any particular makeup trend that you're looking forward for fall/winter?
Dark, colorful nails. I have a new forest green I can’t wait to try and a deep sea blue!

How does your day makeup routine differs from your night time one?
At night I wear a thick swipe of dark liner on my upper lid. It’s very 60s and Audrey, I love it!

Inspiration File: Last minute Holiday table decor

I just wanted to share these gorgeous images for a last minute inspiration in case you're throwing a Holiday dinner party. I love the use of white and gold, with some touches of red and black. Also, the mix of silver and gold is quite interesting don't you think? You can even change the flowers for a pine tree.
PS: the napkins are from West Elm, I have them! They are no longer available (got them last year) but they have these ones ;)

And how pretty those napkins below look? Very easy to do, with both fabric and paper napkins ;)

Outfits File: Weekend Wear

This weekend we started watching Homeland, have you ever watched it? We were hooked by the very first episode, so if you get a chance to watch it I guarantee you won't be disappointed. And yes, maybe the fact that this is the leading guy has something to do with it (who said crush?).

We also spent lots of time in the garden, de-weeding to be precise, while Matthew played on one of his early Christmas presents: a Trampoline!

How was your weekend? Did you go shopping? I did some online shopping, I got this, this and this. Perhaps my Christmas presents?

Christmas - a couple of years ago

Can't believe is just one week until Christmas! Further more, can't believe is been a year since Matthew's first Christmas and almost a year since we came to The Island, crazy! Which means I survived a year in Kone! Hopefully and God willingly we'll celebrate next Christmas in Toronto :)
